SOFTEX (Software Export Declaration) is a form used in India for declaring exports of software and certain software-related services transmitted electronically to customers outside India. It is part of the reporting and valuation process for software exports under the foreign exchange regulations.
SOFTEX filing helps record details such as the exporter, overseas customer, invoice, software exported, and export value. The filing and certification process is handled through the Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) for applicable exporters, including companies registered for software export certification.
How It Works:
- The exporter raises an invoice for the overseas customer.
- Software export details are submitted through the SOFTEX process.
- Required invoices and supporting documents are provided.
- STPI reviews and certifies the export declaration.
- The certified details support export-realisation reporting through the exporter’s authorised dealer bank.
Benefits:
- Provides a formal record of software exports
- Supports foreign exchange reporting requirements
- Helps document export value and invoices
- Creates a clear link between software exports and their realization in India
Example:
An Indian software company develops a cloud-based application for a customer in the United States and raises an invoice of US$20,000. The company submits the required export details through the SOFTEX process so the software export can be reported and certified appropriately.
