What is Shipping Line?

A shipping line is a cargo transportation company responsible for sending goods and containers from one port to another. They are hired to manage vessels by a business to move international cargo.

Shipping lines decide different routes and schedule the cargo based on the destination port. Their services also extend to document preparation and managing the movement of goods during sea journey.

How It Works:

  • The exporter books cargo with a shipping line.
  • The shipping line schedules transportation.
  • Goods are loaded onto the vessel.
  • Shipment is transported to the destination port.

Benefits:

  • Provides essential infrastructure for global trade movement
  • Enables reliable and scheduled transportation of goods
  • Offers economies of scale for bulk cargo shipments
  • Supports international supply chain connectivity

Example:

An Indian exporter wants to send 20 containers of garments to a buyer in Germany. The exporter books container space with a shipping line, which carries the containers from an Indian port to the destination port in Germany.
