What is Consignor?

A Consignor is the person or business that sends goods to another party through a transport service. The consignor provides the goods to the carrier and essential details for the journey.

Most commonly, the seller or supplier is the consignor for the shipment about which the transport documents hold detailed information.

How It Works:

  • The consignor prepares the goods for shipment.
  • Shipping documents are created with consignor and consignee details.
  • The goods are handed over to the carrier or logistics provider.
  • The shipment is transported to the destination.
  • The consignee receives the goods upon arrival.

Benefits:

  • Establishes ownership and responsibility for the shipment.
  • Ensures clear identification of the sender in logistics documentation.
  • Facilitates tracking and customs processing.
  • Supports transparency in international trade.

Example:

An Indian company sends 500 boxes of garments to a buyer in Mumbai. The Indian company is the consignor because it is sending the goods through the transport company.
