What is Inland Container Depot?

Inland Container Depot (ICD) is an export container handling site located away from the seaport. It is used for storing cargo and completing customs-related work.

ICDs are connected to seaports through road or rail transport. They are useful for exporters and importers who are located far from the coast, as they can complete many shipment processes at the ICD itself.

How It Works:

  • Goods are transported from port to the depot.
  • Containers are stored and handled at the facility.
  • Customs clearance can be completed there.
  • Goods are dispatched to final destinations.

Benefits:

  • Reduces congestion at ports
  • Brings customs services closer to businesses
  • Improves logistics efficiency
  • Supports faster cargo handling

Example:

An exporter in Delhi wants to send goods to Europe. The goods are taken to an ICD, where the required customs work is completed. The container is then sent by rail or road to the seaport for the final shipment.
