What is EEFC Account (Exchange Earners’ Foreign Currency Account)?

An EEFC Account (Exchange Earners’ Foreign Currency Account) is a foreign currency account that eligible foreign exchange earners in India can maintain with an authorised dealer bank. It allows them to keep permitted foreign currency earnings in foreign currency instead of immediately converting them into Indian rupees.

The account can be useful for exporters and other eligible businesses that regularly receive and make payments in foreign currencies. Funds held in an EEFC account can be used for permitted foreign currency payments, subject to RBI rules, and may help reduce repeated currency conversions.

How It Works:

  • Exporters receive eligible foreign currency earnings.
  • Funds are credited to the EEFC account.
  • Money remains in the permitted foreign currency.
  • Funds can be used for permitted foreign currency payments.
  • The account operates according to RBI rules.

Benefits:

  • Helps manage foreign currency earnings
  • Reduces repeated currency conversions
  • Supports permitted overseas payments
  • Makes foreign exchange management easier

Example:

An Indian exporter receives payment in US dollars and keeps the eligible amount in an EEFC account. The exporter can later use those dollars for permitted overseas business payments.
