What is E-way Bill?

An e-way bill is an electronic document required for transporting goods worth more than the prescribed limit (usually Rs 50,000) within India. It is generated on the GST portal and contains details of the goods, sender, receiver, and transporter to ensure legal and smooth movement of goods.

The document helps the government to keep track of transported goods and prevent tax evasion. The authority ensures transparency in the transportation process, businesses follow GST rules during the transit process, and goods move faster through the checkpoints.

How It Works:

  • The supplier generates an E-way Bill online before dispatch.
  • Details of goods, transporter, and destination are entered.
  • A unique E-way Bill number is generated.
  • The document accompanies the shipment.
  • Authorities verify it during transit if required.

Benefits:

  • Ensures compliance with tax regulations
  • Enables real time tracking of goods movement
  • Reduces tax evasion
  • Simplifies logistics documentation

Example:

A furniture manufacturer from Jaipur is transporting chairs and other goods worth Rs 80,00 to its client in Delhi. He will first generate an e-way bill on the GST portal before sending furniture, as the total value crosses Rs 50,000. The truck will hold on to the e-way bill to get through the checkpoints easily during transit, complying with GST rules.
