What is TReDS (Trade Receivables Discounting System)?

TReDS (Trade Receivables Discounting System) is an electronic platform regulated by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) that helps MSMEs get their trade invoices financed before the payment due date. It connects MSME sellers with buyers and financiers such as banks and NBFC-Factors.

Through TReDS, eligible invoices are uploaded and accepted by the buyer before financiers bid to finance them. The MSME can select a suitable bid and receive funds earlier, while the financier receives payment from the buyer on the invoice due date. TReDS transactions are processed without recourse to the MSME seller.

How It Works:

  • MSME uploads an invoice as a Factoring Unit (FU).
  • The buyer accepts the invoice on the platform.
  • Financiers submit financing bids.
  • MSME selects a suitable bid and receives funds.
  • The buyer pays the financier on the due date.

Benefits:

  • Improves MSME cash flow
  • Provides faster access to working capital
  • Allows multiple financiers to compete for invoices
  • Reduces dependence on long customer payment cycles

Example:

A manufacturing MSME supplies goods worth ₹10 lakh to a large company with payment due after 60 days. Instead of waiting two months, the MSME uploads the invoice on TReDS. A financier offers to finance the invoice at an agreed discount, allowing the MSME to receive funds earlier while the buyer pays the financier on the due date.
