What is Port of Loading?

A Port of Loading (POL), also called a port of exit or departure port, is a harbor or marine terminal at which cargo is loaded onto a ship leaving for another country. POL is a vital detail mandatory to disclose on customs documents.

POL is selected based on the exporting location, shipping route, and many other factors. It allows customs authorities, buyers, and sellers to track the movement of the goods.

How It Works:

  • Goods are transported to the port.
  • Export formalities are completed.
  • Cargo is loaded onto the vessel.
  • Shipment begins from this port.

Benefits:

  • Establishes the point of origin for international shipments
  • Supports accurate risk allocation under trade terms
  • Ensures proper export documentation and compliance
  • Enables effective coordination with carriers and logistics providers

Example:

Mundra Port can be written as the Port of Loading or POL in the customs document when an Indian exporter ships machinery to Germany. At the port, the goods will be loaded and secured onto a designated vessel for the international journey.
