What is GST on Imports?

GST on imports is the tax levied on imported goods or services imported from another country. These taxes are calculated as IGST or Integrated Goods and Services Tax along with customs duties levied by the authorities at the time of import.

The tax rate on imported goods is calculated based on the type of product or services being purchased. However, eligible businesses can claim Input Tax Credit (ITC) on the GST paid on imports, as per GST regulations.

How It Works:

  • Goods are imported into the country.
  • Customs authorities assess value and applicable taxes.
  • GST is calculated along with customs duty.
  • The importer pays GST at the time of clearance.
  • Input tax credit can be claimed by eligible businesses.

Benefits:

  • Ensures fair taxation between imported and domestic goods
  • Allows input tax credit for businesses
  • Promotes transparency in taxation
  • Simplifies indirect tax structure

Example:

A business imported specialized machinery from the U.S and paid IGST at customs. If eligible, it can claim the tax amount paid as Input Tax Credit.
